One fifth of all the fresh water in the world lies in the four Upper Great Lakes-Michigan, Huron, Superior and Erie. All the outflow empties into the Niagara river and eventually cascades over the falls. At the bottom of the falls, the water travels 15 miles over many gorges until it reaches the fifth Great Lake-Ontario.

Top: US side of the Niagara Falls. The 1060 ft long brink is fairly straight. The Canadian side of the falls is not straight, the shape is of a horse shoe. |

You get helicopters to take you over the falls. You get the best view if you sit next to the pilot. |

The Niagra falls at night. Powerful multicolor fuoroscent lamps light it up, attracting an average One million tourist a month.

You are sure to catch a rainbow on a sunny day. That's why the bridge over the river is called Rainbow Bridge. The Niagara is a fairly young river, only 12,000 years old [a microsecond in geological time actually]. The river today is an international boundary between USA and Canada. You can use the bridge to walk or drive over to Canada.

Below: The horse-shoe shape as seen from the helicopter. The river has a few rapids before it suddenly drops 167ft to create the great fall. 600,000 US Gallons of water drops down every second. That is 2.3 million litres/second!
